  • Will Rodgers Wait Until the Draft?

Four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers is once again making headlines, but this time, it’s for where he won’t be going. The 41-year-old quarterback, recently released by the New York Jets, had his sights set on the Minnesota Vikings. However, with the team committed to young quarterback JJ McCarthy, Rodgers’ dream of donning purple and gold is likely off the table.

Vikings Interest Hits a Roadblock

Rodgers was left without a team after a turbulent two-season stint with the Jets, which included a devastating Achilles injury just four plays into his debut. After a rough 5-12 season, New York decided to part ways, leaving the veteran signal-caller in search of a new home. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Vikings were Rodgers’ top choice, especially after Sam Darnold, who led Minnesota to a 14-3 record last year, departed for the Seattle Seahawks.

Unfortunately for Rodgers, Minnesota appears committed to McCarthy, their highly touted young QB. Despite missing his entire rookie season due to injury, McCarthy is expected to take over the starting role, leaving little room for another veteran quarterback in the mix.

Will Rodgers Wait Until the Draft?

With the Vikings seemingly out of the picture, Rodgers’ list of potential landing spots is shrinking. Reports indicate that his remaining options include the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers, two teams that have also been linked to free agent quarterback Russell Wilson.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport suggests that Rodgers is in no rush to make a decision. “I don’t get the sense he’s in a hurry at all. There’s no deadline for him,” Rapoport said. He even hinted that Rodgers could drag out the process until after the 2025 NFL Draft, much like he did in 2023 when his trade to the Jets wasn’t finalized until April 24, just days before the draft began.

For teams interested in Rodgers, this waiting game could create a dilemma. The Giants and Steelers must decide whether to hold out for the former MVP or pursue other quarterback options before it’s too late. With the draft set for April 24-26, a clearer picture of Rodgers’ future could emerge in the coming weeks.

As the offseason drama unfolds, Rodgers’ legacy remains undeniable. After two decades in the league, most of which were spent with the Green Bay Packers, he has one Super Bowl title to his name and countless accolades. Whether he chooses to suit up for another team, retire, or wait for the perfect opportunity, one thing is certain—Rodgers still commands the attention of the football world.
