After months of speculation and behind-the-scenes discussions, it’s finally happening: Xabi Alonso is returning to Real Madrid — this time, as head coach.

The 43-year-old Spanish tactician, who led Bayer Leverkusen to unprecedented domestic glory, has reportedly signed a contract with Real Madrid until 2028. The official announcement from the club is still pending, but multiple trusted sources — including insider Fabrizio Romano — confirm that the agreement is sealed.

From Midfield Maestro to Madrid Manager

Alonso is no stranger to the Santiago Bernabéu. He played for the club from 2009 to 2014, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Champions League. Now, nearly a decade later, he’s back — but with a whistle and tactics board instead of boots.

After retiring in 2017, Alonso began his coaching career with Real Madrid’s youth teams, then managed Real Sociedad B, and most recently took over Bayer Leverkusen in 2022. In less than three seasons, he transformed Leverkusen into a powerhouse, winning the Bundesliga, German Cup, and Super Cup, and even achieving a historic unbeaten league campaign last season.

Timing the Takeover

Real Madrid wants Alonso in charge in time for the FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off in Miami on June 15. The plan is for him to fly to Madrid on June 1, giving him time to prepare for the opening match against Saudi side Al-Hilal on June 18.

It wasn’t originally Alonso’s intention to take over mid-summer, but after internal talks last week, Madrid decided it made little sense to appoint an interim coach. They want a clean transition and are eager to start the “Alonso era” as soon as possible.

Farewell for a Legend

Current manager Carlo Ancelotti is expected to step down after Madrid’s final home game of the season against Real Sociedad on May 25. The Italian has enjoyed remarkable success in his second spell at the club — winning two La Liga titles, two Super Cups, a Copa del Rey, the Champions League, and the Club World Cup.

Ancelotti, 65, is widely tipped to take over as head coach of the Brazilian national team, with formal talks expected soon.

🚨🇧🇷 Brazilian Federation expect Carlo Ancelotti to be on the touchline already on the first week of June representing the Seleçao.

It’s always been a key condition for Brazil: sign before the FIFA Club World Cup, not an option to wait until July.

Why Real Chose Alonso

Alonso’s playing history with Madrid certainly plays a role, but it’s his rise as a coach that sealed the deal. His tactical intelligence, calm demeanor, and ability to transform a young squad into serial winners at Leverkusen have made him one of Europe’s most coveted managers.

Real Madrid reportedly had a verbal agreement in place with Alonso as early as March, with a gentleman’s understanding from Leverkusen that he could leave if one of his former clubs — Madrid, Liverpool, or Bayern — came calling.

What Comes Next?

With Alonso’s arrival, Real Madrid is looking to begin a new cycle of success. The Club World Cup serves as the launchpad, but bigger goals lie ahead: reclaiming the Champions League and continuing their domestic dominance.

There are also transfer talks underway — the club hopes to complete the signing of Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool before the summer tournament begins.

While Real’s La Liga title challenge faded this season after a dramatic 4-3 loss to Barcelona, all eyes are now on a fresh chapter. One led by a coach who already knows what it means to wear the white shirt — and who now returns to inspire the next generation.
