JJ Spaun Clinches US Open Title in Dramatic Fashion at Oakmont

American golfer JJ Spaun secured his first major title at the 2025 US Open in one of the most dramatic and unpredictable finishes in recent tournament history. The 34-year-old held his nerve in extreme weather conditions to post a final-round 72, finishing one-under-par for the tournament—two strokes ahead of Scotland’s Bob MacIntyre.

Spaun’s win at Oakmont Country Club, one of golf’s toughest courses, marks a milestone in a career that, until now, had seen only flashes of success. Ranked outside the top 100 at the start of 2025, Spaun now rises to No. 8 in the world rankings and positions himself as a strong contender for the US Ryder Cup team.

A Historic First Major Victory

Spaun’s triumph was sealed with a remarkable 65-foot birdie putt on the 18th green, drawing loud cheers from the gallery and stunned reactions across the sport. “I never thought I would be here holding this trophy,” Spaun said after his win. “I didn’t know what my ceiling was, but I’m proud of how resilient I’ve been.”

The victory comes just months after his close defeat to Rory McIlroy in a playoff at The Players Championship and nearly a year after he contemplated stepping away from the game altogether. His last win came at the 2022 Valero Texas Open.

Weather Chaos Adds to US Open Drama

Rain and thunderstorms played a major role on Sunday, halting play for nearly two hours and flooding parts of the course. Players were forced to compete under heavy conditions, with puddles on the fairways and mud-soaked lies in the rough.

“It was one of the toughest days I’ve ever played,” Spaun admitted. “Every shot needed extra focus.”

The weather made Oakmont’s already difficult layout even more punishing. At one point in the final round, not a single player in the field was under par, and seven contenders were within two shots of the lead.

Key Moments That Defined the Day

Spaun’s tournament-clinching birdie wasn’t his only standout moment. He hit the green with a sensational drive on the short par-4 17th, making birdie to gain a one-shot lead. On the final hole, his pinpoint tee shot landed safely in the middle of the green—setting up the dramatic, curling putt for birdie and the championship.

Meanwhile, Bob MacIntyre’s impressive final-round 68, the lowest among the top finishers, wasn’t quite enough. He finished at +1 but was gracious in defeat. “That putt by JJ was just amazing. I’ve got to give him credit,” MacIntyre said.

Struggles for the Favorites

Several big names faltered under the pressure and conditions. Sam Burns, the overnight leader, hit into thick foliage on the 9th and carded multiple double bogeys to fall out of contention. Adam Scott’s back-nine 41 dashed his hopes of a major title after more than a decade of trying. Tyrrell Hatton, one of the top contenders, saw his chances evaporate with a costly bunker sequence on the 17th.

Masters champion Rory McIlroy ended his week on a high note with a final-round 67, securing a top-20 finish before departing early for Northern Ireland, where he will prepare for next month’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

What the Win Means for Spaun

JJ Spaun becomes the third consecutive American to win the US Open, following Wyndham Clark (2023) and Bryson DeChambeau (2024). With his breakthrough performance, he not only earns $4.3 million in prize money but also likely secures a place on the US Ryder Cup team later this year.

“I was close to losing my card last year,” Spaun said. “I told myself if I’m going out, I’m going down swinging. That mindset changed everything.”

His journey from mini-tours to major champion will go down as one of the most inspiring stories in recent golf history.

Key Facts:

  • Winner: JJ Spaun (-1)
  • Runner-up: Bob MacIntyre (+1)
  • Third Place: Viktor Hovland (+2)
  • Top Americans: JJ Spaun, Sam Burns, Scottie Scheffler
  • Weather: Final round suspended for 1 hour, 40 minutes due to rain

Looking Ahead:

The next major on the golf calendar is The Open Championship, set to take place at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland next month. With Spaun’s breakthrough, eyes will be on whether he can continue his form and add another title to his remarkable 2025 season.
