The grind. The sacrifice. The self-belief. For years, Dan Argueta gave everything to mixed martial arts—and this week, he gave it a heartfelt farewell.
At just 31, Dan Argueta the former LFA bantamweight champion and UFC hopeful has officially retired from professional fighting, bringing an abrupt end to a journey that began with promise and closed with painful honesty. In an emotional Instagram post, Argueta announced that he’s closing the book on his MMA career after learning the UFC would not allow him to finish out the final bout on his contract.
“After receiving news of the UFC not giving me the opportunity to finish out the final fight on my contract, I’ve ultimately decided to turn the page,” Argueta wrote. “This isn’t a maybe we’ll get back together. This is a goodbye.”
Known as “The Determined,” Argueta made a name for himself with grit and hustle—qualities that carried him from the amateur scene through the ranks of the LFA, where he became champion, and into the UFC via The Ultimate Fighter 29. But the big leagues proved punishing. Argueta ends his run with a UFC record of 1-3, with two additional no-contests marring what could’ve been career-defining moments.
One of those no-contests came after a refereeing blunder; the other, following opponent Miles Johns’ failed drug test—an incident eerily reminiscent of the infamous Jon Jones-Daniel Cormier rematch saga in 2017.
Despite the setbacks, Argueta’s passion for the sport never wavered. But when the opportunity to keep fighting was taken out of his hands, he chose to walk with dignity.
More Than Wins and Losses
Argueta didn’t leave quietly. His goodbye post reads like a breakup letter to the fight game—one laced with gratitude, heartbreak, and clarity.
“Fighting saved my life,” he wrote. “It taught me more about myself than anything else. It molded me into the man I am today. It helped me find my best friend and soon-to-be wife. It showed me that I CAN do anything I set my mind to.”
He also offered a sincere apology to fans and supporters who believed he had more left to accomplish. “I’m sorry I couldn’t achieve more in the sport,” he wrote. “I had big dreams and was willing to go until the wheels fell off—but God had other plans.”
Argueta’s retirement may not come with a championship send-off or a highlight reel celebration, but it comes with something just as rare in the world of professional sports: self-awareness and peace.
A Fighter’s Legacy
Debuting in 2019 after a successful amateur run, Argueta tore through the LFA ranks, going 5–0 and earning the promotion’s bantamweight crown. He appeared poised for a strong UFC run after his stint on The Ultimate Fighter, where he lost to eventual winner Ricky Turcios. But a string of tough matchups and unlucky breaks led to an uphill battle inside the Octagon.
His lone UFC win came against Nick Aguirre in 2023. After that, it was a rough stretch of losses, weight issues, and unfortunate fight endings. But through it all, Argueta kept showing up, kept swinging, and kept believing.
“To the roughest, toughest, most demanding job on Earth (next to being a parent)… You’re a cruel son of a b****,” he wrote. “But I’ll always love what we had.”
What’s Next for “The Determined”?
Argueta didn’t hint at what his next chapter might look like, but he signed off his message with the same energy that made him a fan favorite:
“I promise to always bring the same enthusiasm, laughter, and determination with me wherever I go in life.”
No comebacks, no hints of “never say never.” Just a clean exit from a sport that shaped him—and that he clearly loved.
For fans of the underdog story, Dan Argueta’s journey may not have ended with UFC gold, but it did end on his terms. And for many fighters, that’s the real victory.
