Fresh off a statement-making win over Michael Chandler, the Liverpool-born fighter is setting his sights on October’s expected UFC event in Abu Dhabi. Pimblett is targeting a top-five opponent and says all signs are pointing toward a high-octane clash with Justin Gaethje—though he’s not ruling out an overdue grudge match with Ilia Topuria.
“I’m hoping to fight in Abu Dhabi in October,” Pimblett told BBC Sport. “I think that’s when I’ll be back in the cage. I was thinking Ilia might call me out if he wins [against Oliveira]. I’d love to beat him if he gets the belt.”
Gaethje Likely Next, Topuria Remains on Radar
Ilia Topuria, the undefeated Spanish-Georgian striker and former featherweight champ, is set to challenge Charles Oliveira for the vacant lightweight belt at UFC 317 in June. If Topuria wins, a future title clash between him and Pimblett could become one of the most anticipated showdowns in the division—especially given their heated personal history.
The two infamously clashed backstage at a hotel ahead of UFC London in 2022, and Pimblett hasn’t forgotten. But with Topuria already booked, Pimblett sees the more immediate opportunity lying with third-ranked Gaethje, a fan-favorite brawler known for his knockouts and willingness to trade fire.
“People actually want to watch Gaethje fight,” Pimblett said. “It’ll be an exciting fight, me versus Gaethje. One win away and I’ll be fighting for the belt. That’s always been the aim.”
No Interest in Tsarukyan
While Arman Tsarukyan remains one of the division’s most technically gifted fighters, Pimblett made it clear he’s not interested in that matchup.
“No one cares about Arman Tsarukyan. He’s just an absolute tool,” Pimblett said bluntly. “It’s me and Gaethje. That’s the fight that makes sense.”
Dreaming of Anfield Main Event
Aside from chasing UFC gold, Pimblett continues to push for something equally personal—headlining a UFC card at Anfield, home to Liverpool FC. Though UFC President Dana White has expressed hesitation about stadium shows, Pimblett insists the atmosphere at Anfield would be unlike anything the UFC has experienced.
“It needs to be Anfield. That’s the only viable place to do it,” he said. “Dana needs to come to Anfield on a Champions League night or a match against United or even Everton. He’d see for himself—he’d be blown away.”
What’s Next?
As the UFC calendar takes shape and the lightweight division prepares for its next shakeup, all eyes will be on Pimblett. Whether it’s Gaethje in Abu Dhabi or a future title clash with Topuria, “The Baddy” knows his next fight will be the biggest of his career—and he’s ready for it.
