Will Kyrie Irving Leave Dallas? Mavericks Lining Up Jrue Holiday Move

The Dallas Mavericks are holding their breath as Kyrie Irving nears a pivotal decision that could reshape the franchise’s future. With a June 24 deadline fast approaching, Irving must choose whether to opt out of the final year of his $43 million contract — a choice that may set off a chain reaction within the NBA.

A Turning Point for the Mavericks

All signs currently point to Irving opting out. ESPN insider Bobby Marks believes that Irving is likely seeking a new, longer-term deal with greater financial security. While that’s a common move for elite players, the implications for Dallas are anything but ordinary.

If Irving walks — or if the Mavericks decide to move on — Dallas may already have a contingency plan in place. One name that’s surfaced as a potential replacement? Jrue Holiday.

Could Jrue Holiday Be Headed to Dallas?

Marks recently speculated on NBC Sports Boston that the Mavericks could pivot to Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday should Irving’s time in Dallas end. Surprisingly, Marks doesn’t believe Dallas would have to give up a first-round pick to acquire Holiday, despite his championship pedigree.

“The goal in Dallas is to lower that $43 million Irving option,” Marks explained, “and that gives you operational power to aggregate contracts… Jrue is still a heck of a player.”

Holiday, though coming off a statistically modest season (11.1 points per game and 35.3% from three), remains one of the league’s most reliable perimeter defenders. His gritty play and championship experience could complement Luka Dončić’s offensive wizardry and align with GM Nico Harrison’s emphasis on team defense.

Big Decisions, Bigger Impacts

Irving’s future doesn’t just affect the Mavericks — it could alter the balance of power in the Western Conference. Dallas isn’t alone in this high-stakes waiting game; the Clippers are facing a similar dilemma with James Harden, another star with a player option. If both opt out, it could trigger a wave of movement involving major NBA teams and names.

What Comes Next?

Kyrie has until June 24 to make his call. If he stays, the Mavericks will aim to build around him and Dončić once more. If not, expect Dallas to act swiftly — and perhaps aggressively — in pursuing a player like Holiday, who offers veteran leadership and two-way stability.

For now, all eyes remain on Kyrie Irving. His choice could dictate the Mavericks’ direction — and shake up the entire league in the process.
