Wisconsin Badgers Make History with Overtime Win in 2025 NCAA Final

The Wisconsin women’s hockey team has once again solidified its dominance in college hockey, capturing its eighth national championship with a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory against Ohio State. The championship game, held at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, was a rematch of last year’s final, and this time, the Badgers emerged victorious in dramatic fashion.

Junior forward Kirsten Simms delivered a performance for the ages, scoring the game-tying goal on a penalty shot with just 18.9 seconds remaining in the third period. With momentum on their side, Wisconsin capitalized in overtime as Simms struck again, netting the game-winning goal less than three minutes into the extra period. Her heroics earned her the Most Outstanding Player honor for the tournament.

This victory marks Wisconsin’s fourth national title in the last six seasons, reaffirming the program’s status as the gold standard in women’s college hockey. Their eight titles put them two ahead of Minnesota, their closest competitor in championship wins.

A Game to Remember

The championship game was filled with intensity, lead changes, and unforgettable moments. Ohio State came out strong, opening the scoring with a shorthanded goal from Joy Dunne. However, Wisconsin responded quickly, with junior Laila Edwards tying the game just 12 seconds later on a power play.

Ohio State extended their lead to 3-1 early in the second period, but the Badgers refused to back down. Junior defender Caroline Harvey scored to cut the deficit to 3-2, setting the stage for Simms’ late-game heroics.

As the clock wound down, Wisconsin continued to press, eventually earning a penalty shot after a crucial challenge for covering the puck in the crease. Simms stepped up and delivered under pressure, sending the game to overtime. Her game-winning goal in overtime sealed the victory and ignited celebrations among Wisconsin fans.

With head coach Mark Johnson at the helm, the Badgers continue to set the standard for excellence in women’s hockey. This championship cements their legacy and sets the stage for continued success in the seasons to come.
