Don Hasselbeck, a respected former NFL tight end and father to quarterbacks Matt and Tim Hasselbeck, has passed away at the age of 70 following a sudden heart attack at his home. His death was confirmed by his son Matt in an emotional tribute shared on social media.

A Powerful Presence on the Field

Standing at 6-foot-7, Hasselbeck was a commanding figure during his nine-year NFL career. After earning All-American honors at the University of Colorado, he was drafted by the New England Patriots in 1977 and quickly proved his worth as a reliable and physical tight end.

His standout year came in 1981 when he led the Patriots with 46 receptions for 808 yards and six touchdowns — an impressive feat in an era not yet dominated by the passing game.

Hasselbeck would go on to play for four NFL teams, including a brief but impactful stint with the Los Angeles Raiders. Though with the Raiders for just part of the 1983 season, he played a vital role in their run to Super Bowl XVIII, catching two regular-season touchdowns and blocking an extra point in the championship game as the Raiders defeated Washington 38–9.

He also spent time with the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings before retiring in 1985. Over 123 games, he tallied 107 receptions, 1,542 yards, and 18 touchdowns — numbers that reflect a steady, team-first contributor throughout his career.

It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of our father, Don Hasselbeck, who suffered cardiac arrest and passed away today. We want to thank our parents’ neighbors and all the medical professionals who came to his aid.

A Father First, Always

Beyond his accomplishments in football, Don Hasselbeck was known as a devoted family man. In a heartfelt message, Matt Hasselbeck wrote:
“He was a great husband, father, grandfather, friend, coach, player, coworker, artist, mentor, and storyteller… What we are most proud of is the leader he was for our family.”

Don’s influence extended well past his own playing days. His two sons would follow his path into professional football. Matt became a three-time Pro Bowler and led the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl appearance in 2006. Tim also reached the NFL as a quarterback before transitioning to a successful broadcasting career.

Their success, they often noted, was rooted in the values their father instilled — humility, hard work, and love for the game.

A Lasting Impact on the Game and Beyond

Even in retirement, Hasselbeck remained involved in football and his local community. He was often seen supporting his sons from the sidelines or mentoring young athletes in the Boston area, where he settled with his wife Betsy and raised their family.

Tributes from across the NFL world have poured in — from former teammates and coaches to fans who remember his toughness on the field and warmth off of it.

Don Hasselbeck’s legacy is one of quiet strength, deep family values, and a lasting contribution to the sport he loved. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren, who now carry on his legacy — not just in football, but in life.
