Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles is bringing his talents to the East Coast after five seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. The 28-year-old linebacker, originally an undrafted free agent out of Arizona, has officially signed with the New York Giants as they continue to strengthen their defensive and special teams units.

Flannigan-Fowles spent the majority of his rookie year on the 49ers’ practice squad before making his NFL debut in 2020. Over his five-year career in San Francisco, he appeared in 73 games and started seven, including three last season. Known for his durability and reliability, he has played in 17 games twice and 16 games once, while also making nine postseason appearances.

A Special Teams Asset with Defensive Experience

While Flannigan-Fowles has contributed as a rotational linebacker, his real impact has been on special teams. Since 2020, he is tied for 19th in the NFL with 37 special teams tackles, and he was fifth in the league with 15 special teams tackles in 2022. His ability to make plays in this critical phase of the game was a key factor in the Giants’ decision to sign him.

Flannigan-Fowles also recorded his first career interception in the 2024 season opener against the New York Jets, showcasing his ability to make plays when called upon defensively. His experience and versatility make him a valuable addition to a Giants team focused on building depth at linebacker and maintaining strength on special teams.

A Tucson, Arizona native, Flannigan-Fowles played college football at the University of Arizona, where he started 36 of 50 games from 2015-2018. He finished his collegiate career with 243 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, six interceptions, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.

The Giants’ front office has been actively adding depth across the roster, and Flannigan-Fowles’ signing fits their strategy of reinforcing special teams while bringing in players who can step in on defense when needed. With his experience and track record, he will look to carve out a crucial role in New York’s lineup for the upcoming season.
