Panthers Release Jadeveon Clowney After One Season in Roster Shakeup

Panthers Release Jadeveon Clowney After One Season in Roster Shakeup

The Carolina Panthers have released veteran pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney after just one season with the team, signaling a shift in direction as rookie minicamp approaches.

Clowney Cut After One-Year Stint

Once a marquee name in the league, Clowney was entering the second year of a two-year, $20 million deal. However, the 32-year-old’s production dipped in 2024, managing only 5.5 sacks—down from 9.5 the year before with Baltimore.

The decision wasn’t purely financial. Carolina had been exploring trade options for the South Carolina native before the draft but ultimately chose to part ways. His cap hit for 2025 would have been nearly $14 million.

The Panthers’ release of Clowney clears the way for younger edge rushers, including free-agent signee Pat Jones II—who posted seven sacks last season for Minnesota—and recent draft picks Nic Scourton (Texas A&M) and Princely Umanmielen (Ole Miss). The team also has D.J. Wonnum and DJ Johnson on the depth chart.

Running Back Jonathon Brooks Out for 2025

In another major roster update, Carolina placed second-year running back Jonathon Brooks on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Brooks is recovering from his second ACL injury in just over a year and will miss the entire 2025 season.

The team also waived tight end hopeful Colin Granger, a former Coastal Carolina basketball player who suffered a hamstring injury, and released veteran tight end Jordan Matthews.

No Surprises, Just Strategic Moves

Panthers GM Dan Morgan had previously been noncommittal when asked about Clowney’s future, making Thursday’s announcement expected. With the roster now younger and more financially flexible, Carolina enters minicamp focused on developing its next generation of defensive leaders.
