Italy’s football schedule paused as world mourns the passing of the Pope.

The Italian football world came to a halt on Easter Monday following the death of Pope Francis at the age of 88. In response, all scheduled matches in Serie A, Serie B, Serie C, and the Primavera league were postponed out of respect for the late pontiff.

The Vatican announced the news early Monday morning. Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, passed away after a long illness. He had been battling pneumonia and had recently returned home after a five-week hospital stay.

"Even with a rag ball, you can work miracles."

Like a light, your words will live on in our hearts and guide us for eternity.

Football on Pause

Four Serie A fixtures were originally set for Easter Monday – a national holiday in Italy:

  • Torino vs Udinese
  • Cagliari vs Fiorentina
  • Genoa vs Lazio
  • Parma vs Juventus

The Italian Football Federation confirmed that these matches will be rescheduled. The decision was made in coordination with league authorities and government officials, citing the Pope’s national and international significance.

A Football Fan at Heart

Pope Francis was a lifelong supporter of Argentine club San Lorenzo. Throughout his papacy, he frequently spoke of the unifying power of sport and met with numerous athletes and teams, including top football clubs.

His love for the game was well known. In 2014, he famously welcomed Bayern Munich to the Vatican and was gifted a jersey bearing his name. His approach to sports reflected his broader philosophy – humility, joy, and unity.

Clubs Pay Tribute

Clubs across the Italian football pyramid released statements honoring Pope Francis:

  • Roma: “A loss that deeply saddens our city and the entire world. His faith, humility, and courage made him a moral compass for our time.”
  • Juventus: “Tonight’s match is postponed. We share in mourning the passing of the pontiff.”
  • Inter Milan: “A man of humility and dialogue who touched the hearts of us all.”
  • AC Milan: “Like a light, your words will live on in our hearts and guide us for eternity.”
  • Atalanta: “A man who embodied international values and loved the game we all cherish.”
  • Fiorentina: “Our thoughts are with all those affected. The Holy Father’s death is a profound loss.”

What’s Next

Serie A and other leagues are expected to resume later this week, but scheduling adjustments may continue depending on upcoming memorial services and public ceremonies.

The Pope’s influence reached far beyond the church – and as the beautiful game pauses to remember him, his presence is being felt on every pitch in Italy.
