Russell Wilson has found a new home with the New York Giants, but he’s keeping something familiar—his iconic No. 3 jersey. The Giants officially announced that Wilson will wear No. 3 for the 2025 season, continuing a tradition that started in Seattle, carried through Denver, and most recently, Pittsburgh.

Banks Makes the Switch

Cornerback Deonte Banks, who wore No. 3 last season, will switch to No. 2. This marks the third jersey change in as many seasons for the young defensive back. As a rookie in 2023, Banks sported No. 25 before switching to No. 3 in 2024. Now, he’ll move one spot down the numerical roster.

Wilson expressed his gratitude in a social media post, thanking Banks for making the change.

“Salute to my guy & young star Tae Banks! Grateful for you letting me wear #3 King! Full of gratitude,” Wilson wrote.

Did Money Change Hands?

In the NFL, it’s common for veteran players to compensate younger teammates when taking over a jersey number. However, there’s been no confirmation of any financial deal between Wilson and Banks. Given Wilson’s career earnings—north of $300 million—he could certainly afford to make the transaction worthwhile if needed.

A Number with History

Wilson has worn No. 3 throughout his entire professional career, making it a symbol of his success. From his Super Bowl-winning days with the Seahawks to his short-lived stints in Denver and Pittsburgh, the number has remained a constant.

For the Giants, No. 3 has its own legacy. Over the franchise’s 101-year history, 17 players have donned the jersey, most notably kicker Pete Gogolak, a Giants Ring of Honor inductee who wore it from 1966 to 1974.

A Fresh Start in New York

Wilson’s arrival in New York signals a new chapter for both the quarterback and the Giants. The team hopes his veteran leadership can stabilize an offense that struggled last season. Meanwhile, Banks, a rising star in the secondary, will look to make an impact regardless of what number he wears.

With the uniform details settled, all eyes now turn to how Wilson will perform in his latest NFL stop. The Giants have made their move—now it’s time to see if Wilson can make No. 3 shine in blue.
