The 2025 French Open has officially begun, and the race for the prestigious Grand Slam title on the red clay of Roland Garros is heating up. Both the men’s and women’s singles draws are stacked with talent, including familiar champions, rising stars, and players peaking at the right moment. With defending champions Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek returning to Paris, fans are eager to see if they can repeat their success—or if new names will etch themselves into tennis history.

Men’s Singles: Alcaraz and Sinner Lead a Competitive Field

Carlos Alcaraz
The reigning French Open champion is once again the favorite to lift the Coupe des Mousquetaires. Ranked World No. 2, Alcaraz enters Roland Garros in fine form after winning titles in Monte Carlo and Rome. His all-court versatility and mental toughness have made him the new face of clay-court dominance. The 21-year-old Spaniard is aiming to capture his third Grand Slam title overall and solidify his place atop the ATP elite.

Jannik Sinner
Currently World No. 1, Sinner is enjoying a breakout season, including a Grand Slam win at the 2024 Australian Open. While clay isn’t his preferred surface, the Italian has improved significantly, recently beating top-tier opponents in Rome. His aggressive baseline game, court coverage, and fitness make him a strong contender, and he’s widely seen as the player best equipped to dethrone Alcaraz.

Novak Djokovic
Although not in his prime form, Djokovic is never out of the picture in a major. A three-time champion at Roland Garros (2016, 2021, 2023), the Serbian legend is hunting for his 25th Grand Slam title. Questions remain about his form and a recent coaching shakeup, but his experience and ability to peak at key moments keep him in the conversation.

Alexander Zverev
A perennial contender at Roland Garros, Zverev has reached the semifinals in Paris three years in a row. His power game, consistent results, and solid clay record suggest he could finally take the next step. A title run would be his long-awaited first Grand Slam win.

Casper Ruud
The Norwegian has been a finalist in two of the last three French Opens and remains one of the best clay-court players in the world. Though he hasn’t won a Grand Slam yet, his comfort on clay and experience on the Parisian stage make him a dangerous opponent.

Women’s Singles: Swiatek Faces Real Competition

Iga Swiatek
The queen of clay returns to her favorite hunting ground. The Polish star has won three of the last four French Open titles (2020, 2022, 2024) and remains the most dominant clay-court player on the WTA Tour. Swiatek’s combination of spin-heavy groundstrokes, movement, and court IQ make her incredibly difficult to beat in Paris. While she’s not the top seed this year, her track record at Roland Garros speaks for itself.

Aryna Sabalenka
The current World No. 1 is known for her raw power and improved consistency in 2025. Sabalenka won the Australian Open earlier this year and reached the semifinals in Madrid and Rome. She’s still chasing her first French Open crown, but her aggressive style can overpower anyone on her day—even on slower surfaces.

Coco Gauff
Gauff reached the final at Roland Garros in 2022 and won her maiden Grand Slam at the 2023 US Open. With one of the best backhands on tour and relentless defense, the American teen star is expected to go deep again. Her improved serve and tactical discipline have made her one of the most consistent performers on all surfaces, including clay.

Mirra Andreeva
At just 17 years old, the Russian sensation has quickly become a household name. After a strong clay season and top-10 wins in 2025, Andreeva is being touted as the WTA’s next big thing. Her game is already well-suited for clay, and Roland Garros might just witness her breakthrough.

Jasmine Paolini
The Italian surprised many with her run to the 2024 French Open final and has only grown in confidence since. She recently won the Rome Open, showcasing her consistency and flair on clay. Paolini isn’t just a one-hit wonder—her skill set makes her a genuine title threat in Paris.

Outlook: A Grand Slam Full of Potential Twists

Both draws are filled with compelling storylines. Will Alcaraz cement his reign as the new king of clay? Can Djokovic pull off another legendary Grand Slam run? Will Swiatek hold off Sabalenka and Gauff to continue her Roland Garros dominance? Or could we see a breakout champion emerge from the younger generation?
