Khabib Nurmagomedov Criticizes Ireland’s MMA Talent; Darren Till Fires Back

Khabib Nurmagomedov, one of the most dominant figures in MMA history, has once again stirred controversy with his recent comments on the disparity between Irish and Dagestani fighters. Speaking ahead of his cousin Usman Nurmagomedov’s upcoming title defense against Irish standout Paul Hughes at a PFL event in Dubai on Jan. 25, Khabib dismissed the depth of MMA talent in Ireland compared to Dagestan.

“Ireland don’t have fighters, brother,” Khabib remarked in a PFL interview. “Let’s be honest. How many fighters do you know from Ireland? Paul Hughes and Conor [McGregor], and who else? There are no fighters.”

While Khabib’s comments sparked debate, his point largely centered around the sheer volume of athletes emerging from Dagestan. Dagestan has consistently produced world-class MMA talent, including UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev and Bellator lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov, among many others.

“Dagestan’s level of MMA is up here,” Khabib added. “Ireland? Not even half of Dagestan’s level.”

Dagestan’s MMA Dominance

Dagestan’s dominance is undeniable. The region has become synonymous with wrestling excellence and elite-level MMA. Fighters from Dagestan are not only renowned for their skillsets but also for their mental toughness and adaptability.

According to Khabib, promoters are even hesitant to sign Dagestani athletes due to the fear of the region monopolizing championships. “So many organizations don’t even sign Dagestani fighters because they worry everybody can become champion,” Khabib claimed.

Paul Hughes and Darren Till Respond

Paul Hughes, who faces Usman Nurmagomedov in January, chose to respond with action rather than words. In a brief but confident statement, Hughes said, “Just wait and see.”

Meanwhile, Darren Till, a former UFC welterweight title contender, weighed in on the debate via X (formerly Twitter). While expressing respect for Khabib and his team, Till criticized Khabib’s dismissal of Ireland’s MMA contributions.

“For him to sit there and say fighters from Ireland are low-level is wrong,” Till wrote. “In terms of size and production, Ireland is actually way ahead. Ireland is so small, and Russia is so big. Ireland has produced amazing fighters over the years.”

Till emphasized that his perspective was unbiased, stating, “This is not me being biased because I am neither friends with Khabib’s side nor Ireland’s side. I’m just stating my opinion.”

A Numbers Game?

The debate between Khabib and his critics highlights the contrasting narratives around MMA talent pools. Dagestan’s unrivaled depth of fighters often overshadows smaller regions like Ireland, which has nonetheless produced iconic figures such as Conor McGregor, Ian Machado Garry, and now Paul Hughes.
