Dallas Mavericks forward Anthony Davis is taking a significant step toward his return from a left adductor strain by working out with the Texas Legends, the Mavericks’ G League affiliate. This assignment will allow Davis to participate in full five-on-five practice, something he hasn’t been able to do with the injury-riddled Mavericks.

Since being acquired in a blockbuster trade that sent Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers six weeks ago, Davis has played just one game for Dallas. That game, on Feb. 8, saw Davis put up 16 points, seven assists, and three blocks in a 116-105 victory over the Houston Rockets before exiting late in the third quarter due to his injury. He hasn’t played since.

After completing his G League workout, Davis was quickly recalled to the Mavericks on Monday, signaling that he may be close to rejoining the team in game action.

Mavericks’ Injury Struggles and Davis’ Importance

The Mavericks’ roster has been hit hard by injuries, forcing them to play multiple games with the league-minimum eight active players. Key players like Kyrie Irving (torn ACL) and Dereck Lively II (ankle stress fracture) remain sidelined, while the team struggles to maintain depth. Two-way players Kessler Edwards and Brandon Williams are nearing their 50-game NBA limit, creating further roster challenges.

With a 33-36 record, Dallas currently sits in the final play-in tournament spot in the Western Conference, making Davis’ return all the more urgent. While some within the organization considered shutting him down for the season, the 10-time All-Star is pushing to return before the playoffs.

Davis has been a dominant force when healthy, averaging 25.7 points, 15.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.2 blocks across 43 games this season. His presence could provide the Mavericks with a much-needed boost as they fight for a postseason spot.

The big question now is whether Davis can stay healthy and help the Mavericks in their final push, or if the risk of re-aggravating his injury will force him back to the sidelines. His return will be closely watched as Dallas hopes to salvage its season.
