San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has been making impressive strides in his recovery after suffering a stroke in November 2024, but his return to the sidelines remains uncertain.

According to ESPN, Popovich has progressed in five months what typically takes nine for many stroke survivors. However, despite these encouraging signs, there is no guarantee he will resume coaching next season.

Veteran Harrison Barnes confirmed Popovich is “ahead of schedule” in his rehabilitation. Meanwhile, players like Keldon Johnson have spoken about how difficult it has been without their longtime coach.

“He’s been our role model since I got here,” Johnson said. “He’s really shaped who I am as a young man.”

On February 27, Popovich made a surprise visit to the team. De’Aaron Fox, who joined the Spurs in early February, recalled the meeting:

“It would go from serious to laughing, back to serious and laughing.”

The moment was a reminder of Popovich’s influence, but it remains unclear whether he will return to full-time coaching.

Spurs Face a Tough Road Without Their Leader

The Spurs have struggled without their iconic coach, dealing with injuries and uncertainty throughout the season.

  • Victor Wembanyama is sidelined due to blood clots.
  • De’Aaron Fox is out for the season following pinkie surgery.
  • The Spurs sit at No. 13 in the standings, with playoff hopes fading.

Acting coach Mitch Johnson has done his best to keep the team focused, and there are signs of progress—they have already won six more games than last season. But with only 15 games left, the focus is on long-term development rather than immediate results.

Despite the obstacles, the Spurs remain hopeful that Popovich will return when he’s ready. He hasn’t ruled out coaching again, saying,

“No one is more excited to see me return to the bench than the talented individuals leading my rehab. They’ve quickly learned I’m less than coachable.”

For now, Spurs fans are left hoping for the day Popovich steps back onto the court, ready to lead his team once again.
