Mark Cuban Slams Mavericks for Luka Dončić Trade: ‘Could’ve Done Better’

The Dallas Mavericks’ decision to trade Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers on February 1 sent shockwaves through the NBA. In exchange for the All-NBA guard, Dallas received Anthony Davis, young guard Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round draft pick. However, Davis, sidelined by an adductor strain, has played just one game since the trade, leaving many to question the wisdom of the move. Meanwhile, the Lakers have flourished, winning eight straight games and securing the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference, while the Mavericks are struggling in 10th place with just 19 regular-season games left.

Mark Cuban, who sold his majority stake in the Mavericks but remains a minority owner, has distanced himself from the trade, making it clear he had no part in the decision. Speaking with WFAA, Cuban expressed his frustration:

“If the Mavs are going to trade Luka, that’s one thing. Just get a better deal. No disrespect to Anthony Davis, but if we had landed four unprotected first-round picks along with Davis and Christie, this would be a completely different conversation.”

History Repeats Itself for Mark Cuban and the Mavericks

Cuban’s disappointment is not just about losing a generational talent like Dončić—it’s about the lack of return. He pointed out that a similar situation happened in 2004 when the Mavericks lost Steve Nash to free agency. Nash went on to win two MVP awards, but Cuban consoled himself with the fact that Dallas eventually won an NBA championship.

“I’ve been through something like this before,” Cuban reflected. “When Nash left, it was tough. But back then, there wasn’t social media amplifying every move. Mistakes happen, but the key issue for the Mavericks now isn’t just the trade itself—it’s the lack of clear communication from the front office.”

The secrecy surrounding the trade has been a major source of frustration for fans and analysts alike. Reports suggest that general manager Nico Harrison didn’t widely shop Dončić around the league, instead focusing on the Lakers. Some sources even claim he passed on larger trade packages to keep negotiations discreet and avoid player backlash.

Now, the Mavericks find themselves in a precarious position. The trade was meant to bolster their chances of competing alongside Kyrie Irving, but with Irving sidelined due to an ACL injury, their season appears all but lost. Looking ahead, Dallas must hope that Davis, Irving, and newly acquired Klay Thompson can regain peak form next season to make this gamble worthwhile.
