Yves Missi: The Bright Spot for the Pelicans in a Tumultuous Season

The New Orleans Pelicans have faced a challenging 2024-2025 season, with a miserable 1-20 record over their last 21 games. Their only recent victory came on December 5th, a narrow win over the Phoenix Suns (126-124). The Pelicans’ struggles have been hard to watch, but there is one shining light in an otherwise dark campaign: Yves Missi.

A raw talent picked at 21st overall in the 2024 NBA Draft, Missi was seen as a project entering his rookie year. However, due to injuries that decimated New Orleans’ frontcourt early in the season, Missi has been thrust into a prominent role and has proven himself as one of the few positive developments for the team. His rise has given the Pelicans something to look forward to, even as the rest of the team falters.

Yves Missi’s ROTY Campaign: New Orleans’ Silver Lining
After closing out 2024 with strong performances, Missi has earned the top spot on the NBA’s Kia Rookie Ladder, surpassing Stephon Castle of the San Antonio Spurs. Though the Pelicans’ overall performance has not matched his individual efforts, Missi’s emergence suggests that New Orleans might have found a key building block for the future.

Since becoming a starter on November 1, Missi has averaged 9.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game across 28 games, while shooting an impressive 57% effective field goal percentage, surpassing the league average of 54.1%. Despite the team’s poor record, Missi has consistently stood out on defense, showing growth as a rim protector. His defensive rating has improved from 121.3 in October to 116.7 in December, highlighting his development.

Missi’s Impact: Defense and Consistency
As the Pelicans drift further from playoff contention, Missi has become increasingly comfortable on both ends of the floor. He ranks second among rookies with 46 blocks, only trailing Alexander Sarr of the Washington Wizards, and his growing presence as a defensive anchor is evident with every game.

Despite the Pelicans’ struggles, Missi’s steady improvement offers some hope for the future. His ability to contribute both offensively and defensively has made him one of the only certainties in New Orleans beyond this season. Alongside wing Trey Murphy III, Missi seems poised to be a key piece for the Pelicans moving forward.
