Will the Warriors Re-Sign Jonathan Kuminga? Here’s What Draymond Green Thinks

Jonathan Kuminga, the 22-year-old forward for the Golden State Warriors, is heading into restricted free agency this summer. With a playoff exit still fresh and the Warriors’ core aging, Kuminga’s next steps could be career-defining — both for himself and for the team.

Kuminga’s fourth NBA season wasn’t easy. Injuries and late-season benchings clouded what could’ve been a breakout year. But through it all, the former seventh-overall pick showed flashes of the player many believe he can become.

Draymond Green Offers Honest Insight

On the latest episode of The Draymond Green Show, the veteran forward addressed Kuminga’s uncertain future. Known for his candor, Green didn’t sugarcoat the challenges ahead — for both Kuminga and the Warriors’ front office.

“You can never be so sure in this business,” Green said. “We all know his talent, what we believe he could be. But now, you have to make a huge financial commitment. It’s not going to be JK at his rookie number anymore.”

Green was pointing out the obvious dilemma: the Warriors will either need to invest heavily in Kuminga or risk losing him to another team willing to pay.

So nice, gotta see it twice.

Jonathan Kuminga’s Maturity Impresses

Despite being benched near the end of the regular season and in the playoffs, Kuminga didn’t lash out. Instead, he praised head coach Steve Kerr for helping him grow, earning the respect of Green.

“I love the way he handled it,” Green said. “That was a responsible, well-thought answer. He’ll get paid — here or somewhere else.”

Kuminga played in just 47 games this season due to a badly sprained ankle but averaged a solid 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists. When Steph Curry went down in the playoffs, Kuminga stepped up, averaging over 24 points on efficient shooting in multiple games.

The Fit Question: Talent vs. Team Needs

Kuminga’s athleticism is undeniable. He can drive past defenders and create his own shot. But playing for the Warriors means adapting to a fast-paced, movement-heavy offense centered around Curry. That demands not just skill, but a high basketball IQ and quick decision-making — areas where Kuminga is still developing.

Green acknowledged this reality: “He’s the athlete. He’s the one that has to do the work. The organization needs to evaluate everything — his role, his fit, and the cost.”

The Road Ahead: Golden State or Beyond?

Jonathan Kuminga entered the league at just 19. He already owns a championship ring but still hasn’t locked down a permanent place in the rotation. His journey so far has had plenty of highs and lows, but the potential remains sky-high.

Draymond believes Kuminga’s talent will ensure he gets rewarded.

“Whether it’s here or somewhere else, he’s going to get paid,” Green said. “He has a bright future. Everybody knows what he’s capable of.”

Final Thoughts

The Warriors are now in a balancing act. They want to give Steph Curry another title run but also must plan for the post-Curry era. Kuminga represents the bridge between the two — if he stays.

This offseason, all eyes will be on Golden State’s front office. Will they bet on Kuminga’s upside, or trade him for a win-now piece? One thing is clear: his time is coming, and someone — whether it’s the Warriors or another team — will be paying to see what he can become.
