Could the Dodgers’ Signing of Hyeseong Kim Lead to a Gavin Lux Trade to the Mariners?

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ acquisition of Hyeseong Kim in free agency has bolstered their infield depth, but it also presents a dilemma. With an already crowded infield that includes Mookie Betts, Miguel Rojas, Gavin Lux, and Max Muncy, the Dodgers may need to move one of their players to balance the roster.

One name that stands out as a trade candidate is Gavin Lux, and the Seattle Mariners could emerge as a potential suitor.

Dodgers’ Infield Surplus Creates Trade Opportunity

The Dodgers have made it clear they plan to keep Mookie Betts in the infield for 2025, which leaves less playing time available for the rest of their infielders. With Hyeseong Kim likely slotting into second base and Max Muncy entrenched at first or third base, the odd man out could be Gavin Lux, a versatile infielder who has yet to fully deliver on his potential.

At 27 years old, Lux has shown flashes of promise but remains inconsistent, hitting .251 with 10 home runs and 50 RBIs in 2024 while striking out 110 times in 139 games. Despite these struggles, his youth, versatility, and contract situation make him an attractive trade target for teams in need of infield depth.

Why Lux Makes Sense for the Mariners

The Seattle Mariners narrowly missed the playoffs last season and are actively seeking upgrades to return to postseason contention. Their current roster features a strong core, including J.P. Crawford, Julio Rodríguez, and Mitch Haniger, but the majority of their talent lies in the outfield.

Adding Gavin Lux to the infield mix would provide much-needed depth and flexibility. Lux can play multiple infield positions and serve as a designated hitter if needed. Given his struggles with consistency, the Mariners could acquire him at a relatively low cost, likely involving lower-level prospects.

What the Trade Could Look Like

The Mariners have a deep farm system, and the Dodgers may target promising but expendable prospects in return for Lux. While Lux’s career has been uneven, his upside and team-friendly contract — under arbitration through 2026 — make him a logical fit for a Mariners team looking for cost-effective ways to improve.

The Potential Upside for Both Teams

  • For the Dodgers: Trading Lux would clear up the infield logjam and potentially bring in young talent to bolster their farm system or address other areas of need.
  • For the Mariners: Lux offers a low-risk, high-reward option that could solidify their infield and add versatility to their lineup.

What’s Next?

As the offseason progresses, the Mariners’ interest in Lux could grow, especially if they feel pressure to keep pace in a competitive American League West. Meanwhile, the Dodgers will need to decide whether Lux’s potential justifies keeping him in a crowded infield or whether they’d be better off capitalizing on his trade value.

With both teams motivated to make moves before Spring Training, don’t be surprised if trade talks heat up in the coming weeks.
